One tool, one problem: the words are already in the pixels.
Once text has been flattened into an image, no amount of clicking will let you edit it. RetypeWords rewrites those words in place and shows you exactly what changed before you download anything.
Who Builds This
RetypeWords is built by a very small independent team — not a venture-backed startup, not a big software company with a hundred products. That shapes what you get. There is one tool here and it does one thing. There is no upsell path into a suite you did not ask for, and no feature list padded to look competitive. It also means we would rather tell you a picture is outside what we handle than take your credit and hand back something you cannot use.
Our Mission
Make the text in any image editable — without making you fix the rest of the picture afterwards. Design tools solve this by putting a new text box on top: the old words are still underneath, the patched background rarely matches, and the font is whatever you managed to find. We are trying to make the honest version of this work, where the original words are actually gone and what replaces them belongs to the picture.
What We Build
One editor. You upload a picture, a scan marks the words it can read, you correct anything it misread, and you type what the words should say instead.
Text replacement in place
The words that are already part of the image are rewritten where they sit, carrying the original weight, size, colour, spacing and the way the letters meet the background. Not a layer on top.
Review before confirming
Compare the edited areas with the original and review any warnings before downloading. AI redraws the whole image and may change details outside your selection.
An honest map of the edges
Flat, clearly rendered English and digits on digital artwork is what this handles well. Handwriting, script lettering, hand-painted signs, and text on a curve or in perspective are not there yet. We would rather say so on the page than in a refund email.
How We Work
A few rules we hold ourselves to, mostly learned by getting them wrong first.
Measure it, then claim it
Every statement about quality on this site comes from running the tool over a fixed evaluation set and reading the results, not from a good demo. When a number is not good enough to publish, that is a reason to fix the tool, not to stop measuring.
Show the change, do not assert it
A before-and-after slider of the whole picture is not enough — you cannot see a single wrong character at that size. So we show each edited region magnified, side by side, with the old text and the new text spelled out.
Clear generation pricing
One credit is deducted when generation starts. Available retries within the same task and downloads cost no extra credits. If the task ends without an image, the credit is returned automatically. A generated image uses the credit even if you choose not to download it.
Say what it cannot do
We explain limitations in the FAQ and show examples you can inspect. Clear, readable lettering is a useful starting point; complex images need closer review.
Who We Build For
People who have a finished picture, need a few words in it to say something else, and do not have the source file.
Marketers and e-commerce teams
A promo image needs a new price, a new date, or a different call to action, and the designer who made it is gone or busy. The layout is fine — it is four words that are wrong.
Creators fixing AI-generated images
The image is right and the lettering is gibberish. Regenerating rolls the dice on the whole picture again and may still spell it wrong. Changing just the words is the smaller, safer edit.
Anyone documenting software
A screenshot in a help article, a deck, or a walkthrough has stale labels. Rebuilding the screen and recapturing it costs an afternoon; retyping the label costs a minute.
Our Story
This started with a simple question we could not answer with a demo: can a model change the words in a picture without quietly changing everything else? So before building a product, we built an evaluation set and measured it. The answer turned out to be a qualified no — the models write the new text correctly far more often than they leave the rest of the picture alone. That result is why this tool shows a full-image comparison and change warnings before download, and why the homepage tells you what it struggles with.
Can text baked into an image be replaced without wrecking the rest of the picture? Not a demo — a fixed set of images, run repeatedly, scored the same way every time.
Two things came out of the measurements. The new words are usually written correctly. Other text in the same picture changes far more often than anyone would guess.
Compare the edited areas with the original and review any warnings before downloading. AI redraws the whole image and may change details outside your selection.
Building the editor around that loop, and narrowing what we claim to what the evaluation set actually supports.
How We Think About Trust & Privacy
You are handing us a picture, often one you have not published yet. The rules below are the ones we would want if we were on your side of the upload button.
You approve every result
Compare the edited areas with the original and review any warnings before downloading. AI redraws the whole image and may change details outside your selection.
Available for 48 hours
Each file expires 48 hours after it is stored, unless the same file is uploaded again and its retention window is renewed. Expired files are unavailable and scheduled for deletion in the cleanup cycle.
Never used for training
Your pictures are processed to produce your result and for nothing else. They are not added to a training set and not sold on.
You decide what you edit
We do not screen your images by category — invoices, forms, screenshots and scans are ordinary things people need to edit. What you may not do is pass an edited image off as a genuine record someone will rely on. That line is in the Acceptable Use Policy, and it is about conduct, not about file types.
